Summary
What Edmunds.com says
Chevrolet makes a pretty good pick-'em-up if powerful engines are your thing. But it has a ways to go to match the Ford F-150 and Toyota Tundra when it comes to the quality materials and assembly.
Pros
Roomy extended cab models, strong V8 engines, available composite bed, disc brakes at all four corners, optional traction control.
Cons:
Cons
Cheap interior materials, sketchy build quality.
What's New for 2001
An available PRO TEC composite truck box and optional traction control are the biggest changes for the Silverado this year. New colors have been added and the OnStar vehicle assistance system debuts as a midyear option.

Review
Bought used with 29,000 miles on it and it now has 53,000. During that time I have had to replace the fuel pump and a rear brake caliper. The v6 has been reliable and has decent power for everyday driving, but the fuel mileage is no better than the v8. 4x4 system works fine and has done well in mud and snow. Tire wear, steering, and ride comfort have all been very good. I am satisfied for the most part but if I were going to buy again I would get the v8. I got the v6 because it had a cheaper sticker price, but I'm not saving anything on gas. It uses just as much as v-8 chevy's that I had previously.
Favorite Features
Good looks (like chevy trucks have always had.) ride and comfort are above average. Interior is nice and controls are easy to reach and use.
Suggested Improvements
The fold down console in the center of the seat is nice to have but it needs to be a couple inches taller, and the latch to the storage inside the console doesn't seem very reliable. Fuel mileage/power ratio is very poor compared to the v8.

Review
After owning it for 8 yrs and 172000 miles who can argue its reliability. It still gets 18mpg with 4.8 v8. Have not done front brakes but did do back. 4 years ago flipped it at 65mph with family in it, no one even got a scratch. Glad ins decided to fix it. All I do is put gas in it and change the oil. Got 75000 miles out of original tires. Only on 3rd set of tires only been aligned 2 times.
Favorite Features
Reliability, never worry when I get in it. Would drive it cross country today. Very safe and comfortable ride. Cold A/c
Suggested Improvements
Figure something out on the back breaks and bearings in the front hubs. Need to improve tailgate latch, plastic clips do not last.

Ive had the truck for several years. Ive grown up in a family that has chev Ford and Dodge. By far the chev has the most power, comfort, and reliability ive ever seen. Very smooth running truck, lots of power for the 5.3. No complaints on fuel economy, its a v8 with more hp than competitors that still manages to get better gas mileage. Chevy for life.
Favorite Features
Strong motor and acceleration, comfortable seating front and rear, just an all around solid truck.
Suggested Improvements
Very squeaky center console where I put my arm every time I dtive. It gets very annoying.

I love my Chevy truck. It is so comfortable for long trips & it gets fantastic gas mileage for a V8. It has lots of leg room & the seats are so plush & comfy. There is plenty of leg room in the back seat too. It is built very well. I have not had any problems with it at all. Good job GM.
Favorite Features
The smooth ride, the big plush comfy seats, cruise, gas mileage, leg room, mirrors, radio, CD player, just everything.
Suggested Improvements
Nothing. It's a great truck.
Bad truck, junk at best, lemon

We sold our 2001 Z71 after just 8000 miles. After having it in the shop every two weeks for 8 months, we decided to unload it. We took a $10,000 loss on it, but the F150 we then reluctantly bought turned out to be our best vehicle ever. Gas mileage was also poor at 12/14 and it didn't have much power for a V8.
Favorite Features
Nice sized box. Sat lower than other 4x4 pickups.
Suggested Improvements
A totally new pickup.
