2001 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 4dr Extended Cab LS 4WD SB (4.8L 8cyl 4A)
Review
Extremely durable and powerful engine. For the time I have had the vehicle I have enjoyed driving it, comfortable and spacious even for the long road trip. Gas mileage isn't great I get around 15 in town and 18 to 20 on the highway.
Favorite Features
The spacious cab is by far the best feature of the Silverado. The powerful engine is a plus.
Suggested Improvements
Everyone says the build quality of this truck is not great, but I havent had one problem with the body quality or the truck performance. The only suggestion I would make is to increase gas mileage.

Great Truck, but

2001 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 2dr Regular Cab LS 4WD SB (4.3L 6cyl 5M)
Review
This is a great truck. Very high build quality and still drives like a new truck. Usual problem with the parking brake dying early and at about 70000 miles echoes of the 'piston slap' problem. New brakes cost $1300 at 120000 miles partially due to problems complicated by the parking brake issue. At 125000 I've got a minor but annoying rear main seal leak.
Favorite Features
Great looking truck. Comfortable and fun to drive. Plenty of power.
Suggested Improvements
GM should fix the 'piston slap' issue. They claim there's nothing wrong but it's annoying.

The truck has been very good. I only have replaced the battery and rear brakes. So far the motor 5.3 has plenty of power. I have added a cold air box, mass air flow sensor and a cat back exhaust. This has given it and me a real kick. Towing is of little effort. But I too have been getting those cold start knocks (lifters).the only real complaint is the brakes. Plain and simple, they stink. Please go back to rear drums. The Firestone tires were horrible. Very poor in wet conditions.
Favorite Features
Real strong motor. Very nice riding. Better then most cars I have been in.
Suggested Improvements
The brakes. The disks are too small. Heat fades to fast. Really need too go back to rear drums. The anti lock feature is dangerous.the arm rest on bucket seats are to low.need to lean down to use them.lifter rap.to low to the ground for a 4x4 truck.
Chevy Trucks, the Best
Vehicle
2001 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 2dr Regular Cab LS 2WD LB (4.3L 6cyl 5M)
Review
I used to be a used car salesman, and the V-8 Chevy trucks were always the hardest to trade for, and most popular to sell. The Chevy truck has been the most reliable vehicle I ever owned. I just looked at the brake pads, and they are only half worn. The only maintenance I have done is tires, and batttery change, and oil changes.
Favorite Features
Power, gas mileage. Cold, cold air. No rattles. Fit and finish of the solid frame body.
Suggested Improvements
More interior room for the single cab.

This truck has been perfect in every way. Unfortunately my commute suddenly got 34 miles longer each way 3 years after getting it. I haven't yet used it enough to have my first problem. I think I have only waxed it once. I expect it to last me 15 more years or 200k miles. I like the new ones styling better but they are always cutting corners as I noticed the chrome is reduced on the front bumpers and the mirrors.
Favorite Features
On the fly 2WD to 4WD switching, auto trac, comfort inside, The sound of a 285 HP V8 at 4000 RPM. 17 mpg combined, 19 on a trip, regardless of how loaded up.
Suggested Improvements
Put a 3.42 rear axle option in the 4.8 liter truck for those that want 23-24 mpg and could give up some towing capability in return. Dress up the welds in the door jambs better.
Miss the old '89.

We owned an 89 Chevy pickup and loved it, even at 110k miles, it still ran great. A very tight machine. We made the mistake in assuming Chevy would continue the tradition when we bought the '01. Engine makes a knocking sound from day one that the dealership mechanic "couldn't hear". Makes the sound to this day. Performance is sluggish and you'd figure if you have slow performance, at least the gas mileage would be good. Wrong. 12- 15mpg. I guess we got spoiled with the '89 p/u truck; wish we still had it.
Favorite Features
Comfortable ride from the longer wheelbase, but makes tight turns difficult. Tow/haul mode is nice since we trailer a camper occasionally. Nice looking exterior; it isn't my favorite running vehicle, but is still a nice truck to look at. Aftermarket exhaust sounds great.
Suggested Improvements
Hopefully, Chevy would dump the 5.3 liter engine and go back to what they do best.. 350c.i./5.7 liter engine. Don't know why they changed engines like that. EPA requirements?

2001 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 4dr Extended Cab LT 4WD SB w/out OnStar (5.3L 8cyl 4A)
Review
I bought this truck from a family member. It was better than new then, and is pretty close now. I'm amazed at the power and handling that this truck has when compared to its size. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a good used truck.
Favorite Features
Seats are extremely comfortable. Good power, good handling. Definitely the appearance. Heated power memory seats..
Suggested Improvements
Obviously fuel economy, most of the issues I have with it were addressed in 2003, even though my truck is better looking than the '03-'06 models.

Good Truck

2001 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 4dr Extended Cab LS 4WD SB (4.8L 8cyl 4A)
Review
This is the most powerful truck I've ever owned! Chassis is also the stiffest as well. Much better than my '03 F150 which I got rid of after 7 months for the '01 Chev. I've had problems with the A/C, got those fixed, also the annoying cold start knock, quiets down after warming up (recommend full-synthetic oil to quiet down). Tie rods and steering system needed fixing at 70,000 miles (very expensive without warranty).
Favorite Features
Gobbs of power! Excellent fuel economy (approx. 18 mpg) Great handling and ride!
Suggested Improvements
Brakes, cold start knock, better components for steering and front end! Idles to low around 400 rpms increase to 650 for smoothe idle.

100K No Problem
Vehicle

Review
I've been extremely pleased with the performance of the vehicle, I chose the 5.3 Vortec to handle the 4WD and tow/haul demands. Most of the mileage is due to a 32 mile one way commute. It has seen its share of mountain logging roads, mud bogs, and desert sands. The transfer into 4WD Low is rough, even in the best of circumstance. (Rolling under 5 mph.) Better get into it before you need it. Gas mileage is still at 18~19 MPG, pulled the plugs at 65K, flushed all drivetrain at 95K, and the coolant is next on the list. The velour interior is showing wear and fading-New Mexico sun and heat will eat fabric. The plastics are holding up well, wish the speakers weren't crackling. Heart Beat USA!
Favorite Features
Handling- the few times I've been out of control the truck made the difference. Daily commute is a pleasure whether going from 30 - 80; or 80 - 0. The cab is fairly quiet, and accessories are within reach. Front seat (Split bench) is still comfortable for short or long runs, lumbar support excellant
Suggested Improvements
Stock rain gutters for the windows so I don't have to go out and buy them. I see there is finally a cargo box made out of something besides steel; it'll be on my next Silverado. Keep the headlights off till I turn them on; I know when it's dark outside. I believe the transfer to 4WD Low is fixed.

Great Truck
Vehicle
2001 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 4dr Extended Cab LS 4WD SB (4.8L 8cyl 4A)
Review
I am very happy with the truck. Never a single problem yet. My regret is not getting enough use of it due to job change that added 80 miles a day to my commute, after owning truck 3 years. Got 18 mpg on trip to FL in summer, fully loaded. Gets 17 mpg if take on 95 mile round trip to work. These are great numbers for ext cab 4wd with 270 HP V8. Rides as smooth and quiet as a luxury car.
Favorite Features
Power yet economy of 4.8 L engine, comfort, value, vehicle can go anywhere and do anything.
Suggested Improvements
Knew when buying it was mostly a commuter for me so I wanted a lower than 3.83 rear axle ratio, but it wasn't offered. I don't need 5500 lbs towing capacity
