Review of the 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

  • Powerful drivetrains, a revamped new look and unique options make the Silverado a pickup worth considering, but Fordís new F-150 has it beat when it comes to interior design and overall refinement.

  • Safety
  • Pros

Roomy extended-cab models, strong V8 engines, innovative features.

  • Cons

Cheap interior materials, questionable build quality.

  • What's New for 2003

The Silverado gets a makeover this year that includes a new front fascia and revised side moldings and taillights. Top-of-the-line models get power-folding heated mirrors with puddle lamps and turn signal indicators. On the inside, the Silverado is the first full-size pickup to offer a Bose stereo system and XM Satellite Radio. The instrument panel and center console have been redesigned, and Chevrolet has added new seats, a more comprehensive driver information center and a dual-zone climate control system. For increased safety, Silverados now feature a standard front-passenger-sensing system and dual-stage airbags. On the hardware side, all 4.3-liter V6-equipped Silverados and California-emission V8s are now ULEV-certified, while electronic throttle control is now standard on all V8 engines. The Autotrac four-wheel-drive system has been modified for less intrusiveness at low speeds, and the brake system received upgrades that provide better pedal feel and improved overall performance.

Best truck in the world

Vehicle: 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 2dr Regular Cab 4WD SB (4.3L 6cyl 5M)

This is our first truck. We shopped around for a year, and checked out every brand. We knew what we wanted, but no one seemed to have it on their lot. We ordered it and it was built just for my wife. We got the 4.8L V8, with manual transmission, and the 4x4 Z71 package. It is the truck of our dreams, and we've had no problems except the stereo overheating from time to time.

My dream truck!

MY BOYFRIEND BOUGHT ONE AND LOVED IT. I DROVE ONE AND LIKED IT TOO. AFTER READING YOUR CONSUMER RATINGS, I KNEW THIS WAS THE ONE I WANTED. IT DOES IT ALL SO MUCH BETTER THAN THE REST. COMFORT, LOOKS, AND GET-UP-AND-GO!! FEEL SORRY FOR THE 2 FELLAS THAT RATED IT AT 1.0 THEY DIDN'T HAVE A REASON AND PROBABLY WOULDN'T KNOW A GOOD TRUCK IF THEY GOT RUN INTO.

The power in the new Silverado's is what made me pick it above the competition. The new look is great too. It rides quite comfortably and handles very well for a full-size pickup. With the biggest tires available stock from Chevy, the lowest point to the ground besides the tire is approximately 9.5 inches off the ground which is exceptional ground clearance for a stock truck. With what I do to pickups, i need the kind of off-road performance that the Z71 off-road package delivers. This is a good truck.
