2003 Chevy vibrates and roaring noise comes from rear of truck at 40 mph and up. Had the Chevy dealer replace 2 bearings in rear end but did not fix problem. Dealer says it might be the ring and pinion($800+ labor). I'm not sure I want to pay that kind of money that might fix the problem.

Hi, I was wondering if anyone has an idea what this problem might be. I have a 2003 6 cyl 4.2L? auto tran, extended cab Sonoma GMC 2800 miles. When I pull into my driveway (tight right turn) at slow speeds/(kind of rolling in using the brake) it makes a metal groaning noise. I took it to the dealer but he couldn't recreate the noise. The s-10 is DONE - nada - no more - 2003 will be the last production year for GM's compact pickup - to be replaced by the "mid size" Chevrolet Colorado and the GMC Canyon. To me, GM has priced a lot of people out of trucks with this move. I'm not supportive of it.
I just purchased a 2003 S10 with the ZQ8 sport suspension pkg.(4.3L). I owned a 1993 Sonoma before and it proved to be a great truck. I traded it in on a Camaro (which has and still is a fun and reliable car). I am pretty biased toward Chevrolet, so I really cannot give an objective opinion on your message. However, I also used my GM Card earnings (only $600). You ... Read More
After 4200 miles on my 2001 4x4 crew cab I can report an average of 16mpg in town and 20-21 on the highway. The highway trips include 50 miles per tank in town or around town as well so I expect the "all road" mileage to be slightly better. Time will tell. Chevy NEEDS to fix the gas gauge. It has been a constant problem in chevs since my "69" malibu... ... Read More
S-10 experience and extended warranties

I have a 1997 S-10, short box, 4x4. Bought it brand new, and it now has 28,000 miles. It had a noticeable vibration when new, and the dealer danced around a "tire balance" problem before they finally caved in to my demands for a new driveshaft. That fixed the vibration. Later on, they had to replace the engine belt tensioner (noisy) and replace the brake pedal/ shifter release solenoid (couldn't shift ... Read More
