This car is first GM product I have purchased since early 70's and it's deffinetly a winner for both performance and reliability. Car is also excellent in fuel economy

2001 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS 2dr Coupe (3.8L 6cyl 4A)

Review

Purchased this car for trips and cruising. Front heated seats are excellent for long runs. Never feel fatigued or cramped after all day drives. Receive plenty of good comments on the car's looks and Torch Red paint with the graphite interior. You either like the styling or not, no in betweens. The ladies love this car.

Favorite Features

Very comfortable seating. Heated seats are great! Roomy rear seating. Steering wheel controls are great. Sound system volume is speed compensating, set & forget it. Average 27-28 mpg consistantly. Very stable at speed even to 100 mph. Split folding rear seat and large trunk hauls large items easily.

Suggested Improvements

Needs a V8! Exhaust system too quiet. Front seat belt placement not good. Fog lamps burn out easily & useless. More storage for center consle. Improved sporting suspension. Better chip resistant paint.

2001 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS 2dr Coupe (3.8L 6cyl 4A)

Review

This car has been underrated on fuel economy and performance. We have averaged 29 MPG (not just highway) since owning it. It is a beautiful car and had good pick up considering it is a V6. The original tires we had were noisy, and since changing them at 60,000 miles to a style with that in mind, this one drawback has been greatly improved.

Favorite Features

Our car in an understated solid black with no decals, no bowtie, just the SS in red. We have dark tinted windows. It looks like a sleek, intimidating machine. It is the best looking sports coupe period. We are proud to own it.

Suggested Improvements

Make a V-8, though I understand this is an option in the 2006. Do not make this car more garish.

Review

This is a pretty nice car. My wife drives very short distances with it. So the city mileage is low - 14 to 17 mpg. On the highway at 65 mph - 29 to 31 mpg. My gripe with this car is repairs! After having the car 6 months the driver's side air bag (the one mounted on the drivers seat) failed. Then when it got inspected a tie-rod end was bad. And the leather cover on the drivers seat keeps pulling away from the side air-bag mount. The stereo system is very poor. It is an SS so you would expect something really good - and it is NOT.

Favorite Features

Heated leather seats, driver side - side air bag. A/C works great.

Suggested Improvements

Much better stereo system.

I love the looks of the car inside and outside. Still gets looks and compliments. However, I have had major repair problems. They began at 68,000 miles when the transmission had to be replaced at a price of $2,800, the entire ingnition system at a price of $700.00, heating thermostat which cost only $30.00, but had labor of $300.00, and lastly a wheel bearing at $200.00. Items that do not work properly are the turn signals, that only work when they want to, the steering wheel that has a vibration and now recently the window switch is going out on the drivers side. Drivers's side seat heater quit working at about 50,000 miles.

Favorite Features

Love the interior and especially the controls on the steering wheel. Love the power when you need it, or want it.

Suggested Improvements

Doors are heavy and will slam your legs.

This is the first car that I have ever owned that did not have to go back to the dealership for something to be fixed. I have not had any problems with my Monte in over 3 years. I love my dependable car. It's definitely the "Full Monty"!

Favorite Features

Great styling, great fit on all parts. People are always complimenting my stylish car. And it was very affordable!

Oh, geezz...this car was a dream when I bought it new! It is fast and furious. When a 4 year old stops you at a gas station and tells you your car is cool and you aren't driving a fire truck...you know you are sporting a good looking ride. Since the warranty ran out I have had a few problems. Signal lights work when they want to. Which is very dangerous! Steering wheel controls don't work sometimes, transmission is slipping and a seal leaking. Very costly repairs at 40,000 miles!! Was hoping to get more out of this good looking car.

Favorite Features

Overall Look! Get up and go! Gas mileage is pretty good. Steering wheel controls (when they work).

Suggested Improvements

Make it easier to get into the back seat. Also the front door slams shut if not opened all of the way (watch your legs). Fix the electrical issues that several of us are having. Rear stereo controls. Interrior squeaking. !?!?

Review

Been driving for over 3 years. Driven quite aggressively, but the car has held up remarkably well. The engine works just like it was new. No major mechanical problems. Did have some problems with the side airbag on the leather seat, but it was fixed under warranty. I average 30 miles per gallon despite really hammering the throttle. I plan to keep this car until it dies. There is something to be said for the nice low-tech 3.8 liter pushrod. May not have the power of the Japanese DOHC's, but darn, its so reliable and efficient.

Favorite Features

I love the engine and all the dials on the instrument panel. I also really like that the ignition is on the dash instead of the steering column. Trunk space is great.

Suggested Improvements

Had problems with the brakes. Dealer replaced them under warranty, but it was like pulling teeth to get that. Ground clearance is a bit of an issue. Traction control is totally stupid. I turn it off when it snows or rains.

I love everything about this car, from the body style to the engine. After owning this car for 3 years I still enjoy driving it. I own the metallic jade green SS 2 dr model, and never want to part with it. This car is fun to drive and with the sunroof open and Michael Jackson on the radio, there is no greater joy!
