Electrical system had a gremlin in it, idiot lights went off for no reason. Occasionally the radio turns on inside the car while you unlock the doors without engine running. Hood latch replaced, auto start wouldn't work, trunk latch replaced, inside trunk button stopped working, trunk lock stuck so you can't open the trunk any of the 3 ways. Service couldn't fix. On my 2nd key fob now and the door unlock doesn't work so thats 2 out of 4 buttons that are useless. Fob is junk drop it a few times and the battery clip inside breaks off. In tank gas gauge is broken. Fill the tank, dash gauge say empty, gas tank low, dash gauge says full. Stirring column replaced. Dealer says it needs it again. Horn shorted

use better parts to build the cars or lower the price.car was a disappointment after 2 yr now I'm stuck with it for now
This is scarey as I have or had the same opionion and issues with mine.
Still have it presently @ 125K miles, but steering rack is starting to knock again, 3rd, and column replaced 2x, and rear shock mounts are banging.
Shocks were all replaced 1 yr back -- I think the dealer hosed me or just did not install properly.
Overall, the promise was there for the 2004 car of the year, yet the experience has been a frustrating disappointment.
If I'm going to continue to buy American, I may have to go with Ford.
i agree with all the comments above.
I also have a chevy malibu LS 2004- bought it brand new-
there were a couple things the dealer could never fix- the steering column keeps knocking from the few months i bought it until this day.
i changed it twice, once under warranty and the other out of pocket.
then i have given up.
the dealer keeps gving the same diagnosis and offers to fix it for a heavy price and it keeps breaking.
feels like im getting the run around.
-the other thing that kept breaking is the fuel guage.
not sure if i fixed it once or twice, but it just keeps breaking.
i just dont have faith anymore in that part of the car.
-the last thing is the fluttering front breaks.
no dealer, no firestone can figure that out.
break flutters after hiting a pot hole, or pressing hard on the brake while driving in rain or snow.
-despite that the car ran well all this time, the fluttering brakes and the knocking and shaking steering wheel does give me a heart attack sometimes when it happens.
