Yeah...the starting problem was COMPLETELY the battery. I had the battery checked before, and the meter showed it didn't need to be replaced...but someone at the GM dealership recommended the battery change...instead of paying through the nose for diagnosis, I went with an independent mechanic and replaced the battery (it was 5 years old.) I had seriously considered a Camry. My last car was a Chevy Prizm (Corolla twin), and I liked the Toyota motor. The Camry is a great car with a price much better than the Accord. Honda also screws you on options. Don't get me wrong...very nice cars, but they should be for the initial cost of ownership. Anyway, I fell into a 9 month old 2004 GM program Malibu LS. The ... I have a 2004 Maxx LS and have not had the thumping problem. I'm no expert, but problem may be caused by the steering gear pre-load adjustment. While the power assist is electric and built into the steering wheel, the steering gear is a standard manual rack and pinion system. There is TSB for this, but it says it only applies to GM Chevy dealers in Mexico. It's TSB 04-02-32-003, issued ... Read More

Two days ago I was merging onto the freeway and once again had no directional. Left, right or hazard lights which I quickly checked. By the time I got fully into traffic they were back. I'm getting tired of Chevrolet sending me dealership performance questionaires asking me what I think of the dealership performance and not what I think of their car.

Well, I've repaired my horn problem. I searched on the internet and came up with this manual with information on how to disable and enable the airbag on the new Malibu. Zone 3, page 2-159. http://www.gmgoodwrench.com/gmgoodwrenchjsp/gmspo/Chevrolet/Malibu/2004-2005/00_Complete_M- - anual.pdf The thing is that I cannot afford to have the car tied up for how long at the dealer. After following the disabling procedure I removed the upper and lower steering colunm covers ... Read More

Hi Tom, Well, I bought my molded splash guards for my '04 Malibu from the parts department of my Chevy dealer. I ordered them while accepting delivery of my car. The dealer had to order them. Just be sure to specify the 2004 Malibu. I did, but they still managed to order the set for the '97 ... Read More

Surely there are better and more reliable used Japanese models out there for you to throw your hard earned money at First of all, chevy is more reliable than toyota, and has benn for about 2 years now. Its only then overall toyota with lexus vs ALL OF GM that the reliablility is different. Second of all, didn't the Malibu do much better in all the quality rankings as of late? ... Read More

Try a different dealer. My experience with a "problem" on my 2004 Malibu was as follows: The dealer applied window tint to the rear window. This is SOP for all vehicles they sell. The 2004 Malibu, with both a defogger and an antenna in the rear window, thus gets a third conductor. The window tint, a third conductor, allows the defogger to short to the antenna. This enables the antenna to ... Read More
I bought a certified 2004 Malibu LS a few weeks ago. I drive to work 65 miles each way, about 90% highway. My average speed (which I reset every time I fill the tank) has been either 50, 51, or 52 mph. I do not use the computer fuel economy reading. I have always kept track of fuel economy in a book for each car since I started driving 22 years ... Read More

I did buy a Lemon and GM bought it back just recently. I had the same problems with the stereo, they replaced it 4 times then in April they put an 05 stereo in it and that fixed that finally, there is a software problem apparently in the 04. I have a 2004 Malibu LS with 18,100 miles (April 2004 build date-last 6 of VIN 209856). I've had no problems with this vehicle until last Friday when the "Check Gas Cap" message came on the DIC. I checked, and the cap was on tight. I have also filled the tank since the first time the message has appeared. It's been a week (approximately 14 engine starts) and the message still ... Read More
The adaptor I purchased is the GM12-AUX v2. Unfortunately, it is 12 pin and Maxx is 24 pin. It says 2004 Malibu, but it must be for the '04 Malibu "Classic"--GM did us no favors by having two 2004 Malibus in the line-up. PIE (Precision Interface Electronics--www.pie.net), called, they do not have an adaptor. I found another adapter-- Peripheral Interface Components #PXGM24-- that is 24 pin and made for GM class ... Larry Brown, Fullerton CA. I purchased my Malibu Maxx LS yesterday 8/28/2004 and I have exactly 100 miles on it. I bought a 2004 Malibu Super Sport. Went this weekend to buy brake pads and according to the parts dealers in my area, the car doesn't even exist. I've researched on the internet to no avail. They don't even list it on the Chevy web site! Anyone ever heard of this car and know where I can get more information?
Hi, Folks: I recently bought the subject vehicle with some 16K miles. I would like to know what items to tell the service advisor about better fuel economy when I return the vehicle for servicing and warranty work. Also, I would like to learn from other 2004 Chevy Malibu Classic owners the problems they have had with this car. Thanks, fourls :)

The left pull is a separate issue from the column recall. I think some early Maxxs had power steering failures, hence the recall. Here is the TSB for the left pull: Informational - Vehicle Leads/Pulls Characteristics and Diagnosis #04-03-06-001 - (Sep 10, 2004) 2004-2005 Chevrolet Malibu and Malibu MAXX Lead/Pull Description At a constant highway speed on a typical straight road, lead/pull is the amount of effort required at the steering ...
