Man, someone is making money off you folks. The water pump kit is about $150, that is a new water pump too. Water pump R&R is about 6 hours. So figuring a high $85/hour, that brings it to $580,plus incidentals of about another $60 Which brings it to $640. Now, the part that YOU should pay close attention to is the parts in the TSB I have made bold. Water Pump ... Read More

homer29 getting knocked around

Replacing one of the CV joint boots -- hmmm, was it ripped? If so it would have slung grease all around the surrounding area. Very noticeable. Usually a dry CV joint makes a clicking sound in slow turns, definitely not a clunk. If it were clunking, I doubt the vehicle would be driveable. Any reputable dealer will attach a Chassis Ear to find the noise source. Heck, I got my own. ... Read More

Malibu - The reason a GM Product will never again come home with me
Written by: dukeorange on Oct 13, 2002 9:56:44 AM
For those of you who are considering a Malibu let me explain. Our current car is a 1999 model. We were dumb enough to get it after GM took our 1997 back under the Washington State Lemon Law. We thought lightning would not strike us twice so to speak. The 1997 car had repeated brake problems (warpage, brake booster failure among other things). In addition speakers broke as did electric mirror ... Read More

1998 Nightmare
Written by: angelflightguy on Jun 29, 2002 10:23:32 AM
I turned in a 1989 Toyota Tercel with 189,000 miles for my new 1998 Malibu LS. BIG MISTAKE. In all the 11 years and miles on the Toyota, aside from normal wear and tear items, I had to replace my alternator twice. Since 1998, I have replaced (most AFTER warranty) four sets of rotors (the NTSB website has over 10,000 complaints of bad Malibu rotors) which was finally fixed by changing ... Read More

Nope. The upcoming 2003 Saturn ION (Based on the all new GM Delta small car platform) should give you an idea of how the Chevy Cavalier replacement might look like. I believe the ION is to be released within the next few months. I believe the Cavalier replacement is still delayed. Right now GM/Chevy are putting a great emphasis in the Malibu's replacement for 2004. The Opel Vectra/Signium (Built on the ... Read More

I like this car very much with her roomy, stable on highway, good acceleration ... plus this is my first brand new car except I have to visited the dealer for quite a few times to fix the problem. Nearing End of Waranty
Written by: nestorm on Aug 18, 2001 8:08:46 PM
I know have 32,000 miles on my 1999 Malibu LS. The only problem thus far, was the battery went dead, & was replaced at no cost. I am thinking of taking it to the dealer to have it checked prior to the 36,000 mile end of waranty. There have been no problems at all with the car, & I have been very pleased with it. My question is: If I take ... Read More

I read your post where your wife was hit at 40 mph. I guess the Malibu will hold up well in a rear end collision. I was rear ended at 50 mph a number of years ago and my car was totaled. I had a '80 Chevy Citation. Either those extra 10 miles makes all the difference or the Malibu construction is much better. I can't remember what Consumer Reports says ... Read More

Good to hear that you didn't get any big trouble with your 98 model. I think Malibu got the bad remarks mostly because of the brakes problem. According to the "2001 April Auto issue" of consumer reports, engine and transmission of malibu rated good to excellent in terms of reliability all along. Overall Malibu is now on Average reliability from worse since 1999 model year. I think thats a very good ... Read More

malibu99: Great observation! I could kind of understand if Chevrolet would remove the lock to reduce the cost, but just didn't get why they would change the design of the glove compartment. Now that you mentioned it, I think it is probably true that it was redesigned to cover up the fuse boxes and wires behind it. Because if you look at the design carefully, the cover of the glove compartment ... Read More

Don't the 1998/1999 Malibu's have such a place as aniazi described as well? and yes, the 1998/1999 Malibu's are equipped with automatic headlamps. Though it does not have a so-called "Automatic Light Control Dim-to-Park" that allows you to turn off headlamps at night when automatic lighting control mode is in effect--the headlamps stay on whenever the sensor senses the need to, whether you want it or not--which to my understanding is ... You recommend Grand Prix over Malibu. Though, it depends on trim, driving style, and price. The base trim, GP SE, indeed is not much more expensive than Malibu. Possibly, even less expensive sometimes - depending on incentives and options. Though, it have the same engine as Malibu. I believe, with the same spark plug wiring. Would the same problem developed as with your Malibu, all depends on the dealer service. Your ... Read More
