Test Driver Ratings & Comments
Acceleration commentsIn Drive with traction control on, the Impala allows a useful wisp of wheelspin. I was surprised to find there was essentially NO torque-steer effect with this much power. Nice engine snarl, too. There is no Drive Sport mode, but there is a button atop the shift lever for manual shift mode. What I believed to be shift paddles on the back of the steering wheel were actually audio controls. I improved the acceleration slightly by shutting off traction control and getting a little more wheelspin.
Braking commentsThis car feels big and heavy in this test. All stops were reasonable distances, straight and ABS muted, but there's quite a lot of dive and the medium-soft pedal grew softer and brake odor was evident by the fourth stop from 60 mph.
Handling comments"Slalom: Ultra-light steering effort combined with quick reaction and generous body roll. These are the sorts of dynamics one might have expected a few years ago in a medium/large sedan, but not today. Not what I'd call confident or capable, but the tires do offer a useful amount of grip. With ESC/Trac both on, it would alternatively grab a brake and cut throttle. I doubt it would go any faster with everything shut off because the time it takes to transition side-to-side between cones is the limiting factor here. I managed a little quicker pass with the traction control disabled because I could put a little more power down through the exit.
