Summary
What Edmunds.com says
The 240-horse SS adds some much needed excitement to the Impala lineup, but this full-size sedan still lags behind the competition when it comes to refinement.
Pros
Six-passenger seating availability, good crash test scores, torquey V6 engines.
Cons
Vague steering, soggy suspension on base and LS models, low-buck interior.
What's New for 2004
The supercharged Impala SS joins the lineup for 2004. Besides offering 240 horsepower, the SS features a tightened suspension to allow it to take corners with a bit more gusto. Base and LS models have redesigned bench and bucket seats, and a sport appearance package is now available on the base sedan.

Have had very few break downs, only problem have been the brakes but it is not that much of a problem. Also it gets pretty good gas mileage for a 4dr Sudan. Though I found the default radio deck controls kind of confusing at first, as I am use to simpler buttons, but there not that hard to understand.
Favorite Features
Okay stock stereo. I like the driving lights. Okay highway gas mileage.

Traded in an Oldsmobile Sillouette. Did see a particular need for a van & also the discontinuance of Olds. Always have been a family car person. Bought the Impala here in PA (Monesson). Been completely satisfied. Only long tripwas to Columbus, GA & back to Pgh area PA. Great gas mileage. Once on the open hiway, I set cruise control on 61 or 62. I do not fight traffic.
Favorite Features
No special features. Just a good reliable vehicle.
Suggested Improvements
I had a compass in the Silloutte. Maybe a compass on the dash.
Love it!

I love my Impala SS Indy Limited edition. It has been an overall great car! It is comfortable, fun to drive, and the sterreo is awesome! My only complaint with this vehicle is having to put premium gas in it. Ooch! It is not a winter vehicle unless you live somewhere that doesn't get any snow!
Favorite Features
Stereo system, interior and exterior design I think it is much nicer than the newer body style!
Suggested Improvements
Do something about the premium gas!

Bought the car late 2003. Still have it and am now at 108,000 miles. Replaced the temp gauge at 80,000 miles, brakes at 87,000 miles and had no other major problems until 106,000 miles and then the biggie: Transmission went bad. Had to be rebuilt ($2,000). After that bummer, I have resummed my love for the car. Rides smooth, love the interior room. Not the easiest to handle on curves, but this car will fly! Lots of power, with a hint of a luxury feel. Great for road trips. Could be more sound proof inside, but overall well-built car. Would probably buy another.
Favorite Features
Interior room, smooth ride, powerful, still rides beautifully with no noises (rattles, squeakes) at 108,000 miles.

Purchased my Impala Oct '04 and it ranks as my best purchase ever. More than 42 years of driving & owning 11 previous cars + 4 or 5 company vehicles. Key points: Fuel economy is outstanding. Who needs econo-boxes? On cruise control at 55 = 35+ MPG all day long. At 60 it gets 31 MPG. Maintenance: This car's been trouble- free for nearly 56,000 miles. A defective dashboard display was replaced at dealer's request and under warrenty early in 2007. I'm on 2nd set of tires and brakes (49K miles). The car's a hoot to drive and the kids in the little imports can't believe the way my Impala handles and outperforms much smaller cars. I'm sold!
Favorite Features
Overhead computer, steering wheel controls, drop-down rear seat for hauling 8' lengths of lumber
Suggested Improvements
Head rests that support head without having to tilt your head back. Polychromic rear view mirror that really darkens. Outside mirrors that darken at night.
