I thought wind noise was a very common issue, since the 2006+ Impala board here (that Edmunds has closed to new posts) has several posts mentioning the noise that I immediately noticed on the highway. The dealer only has 2 new Impalas and the other was an SS that I wasn't interested in. Maybe I'll try to find another dealer with a better selection so I can test drive another to ... Read More
Selling more cars is important to GM. Prime example: For those that remember Chevy spent a ton of money advertising the 1994 Impala SS when it came out. Had the detuned Corvette engine 17" wheels, RWD. people rushed to the showrooms to see the car. It only came in BLACK and had the shifter on the steering column, sales were disappointing, and the car was almost cancelled. A couple Chevy salesmen ... Read More

Your right, in 1955 the 265 Cubic Inch V8 was rushed into production. In 1955 Chevrolet only had two models. The Corvette and full sized chevrolet..(at that time the Belair was the top of the line full size chevrolet like the Impala is today) because Ford and Chrysler at that time had V8's as well as other GM division cars, performance was heating up just like it is now....Nascar racing was ... Bob Lutz is the Vice Chairman of GM, but he is in the spotlight all the time....he is the current architect of the new models, he's 72 years old some like him/some hate him.....he's not afraid to speak his mind...worked with many auto companies in the past. The LTZ model is being dubbed the LuTZ model after LUTZ....however the LTZ moniker was used on the Chevrolet Caprice Classic I believe 1993-1996. ... Read More
2004 Chevrolet Impala SS vs. 1996 Chevrolet Impala
Written by: chevyfanatic69 on Apr 25, 2004 11:16:14 AM
I was looking at the test results of a new Impala SS and saw that it could keep up with or even beat 1994-1996 SS Impala's. I know its FWD and has a V-6 (although a very powerful one) I think it should get some respect at least for not being a SS with a N/A 3800 V-6 like the 2000-Present Monte Carlos

I have a minor correction. There indeed have been many successful unibody cop cars. Every Chrysler Corporation car (except the 1960-1967 Imperial) was unibody since 1960, and they had well over 60% of the police market for many years, and were a strong contender for police sales until the Diplomat/Gran Fury were discontinued in 1989. Also, Chevy's Nova was unibody, and it was a successful (in performance, at least, maybe not ... Read More

I don't think the lack of power was the only issue with this car,its huge, its heavy, and it ain't cheap.. but even with a larger engine and more torque would not compete with current Altimas and Maximas with their 3.5 engine....only a few nostalgic Ford lovers showed true interest in the car....Same with the current retro T Bird...sales are way below expectations it will also probably be discontinued within a ... Some nice pictures of the new '04 Impala SS: http://www.edmunds.com/future/2004/chevrolet/impala/100086195/pho- - - - - - - - - - - tos.html?tid=edmunds.f.review.vdpheaderphoto..0.Chevrolet* Dare I say the side panels resemble the 1996 model. It's a real shame it didn't get the new 3800 Series III engine with 260 ponies ('04 Pontiac GTP), instead of the outdated 3800 Series II motor.
Pricing is always a consideration when purchasing a new vehicle. For sure the Impala SS isn't going to be cheap. Everything has a cost. Fat 17" wheels + tires, beefed suspension, gauge package, SS badging etc. The 2004 SS will be a specialty car in Chevys lineup like the 1994-1996 SS was. Most of those sold for list price.. From the 1960's onward top of the line Pontiac models always offered ... Read More

Almost all Chevy products from the 1950's to the present date never had great interior fabric materials. When Impala back in the late 50's, 60s and 70s competed with at the time Pontiac Bonneville and Ford Galaxie the Impala always had the cheaper looking seats and instrument panels. Same through the 80's and 90's competing with the Crown Vic. Its has always been a negative for Chevy. I believe they design ... Read More
According to the Standard Catalog of Chevrolet: 1912-1998, here are the prices for '96: Caprice Classic sedan: $19,905 Caprice Classic wagon: $22,405 Impala SS sedan: $24,505 No LS trim was offered starting in '95 Here's something weird that I discovered during my research: The catalog states that only 485 Caprice wagons were built in calendar-year 1996. If that's true, then that's one rare puppy right there.
Toyota Camrys are made in Kentucky. Honda Accords are made in Ohio. I did not mention either brand in my #8530 post. I consider my Impala basically a Canadian - made car because that is where it was assembled. ( Read the stats and it is apparent that NAFTA has caused the loss of many American manufacturing jobs - especially in the auto industry. But I digress...) BTW, I've driven a ... Read More

I don't see Chevrolet making any major changes to the 2003 Impala model. The current Malibu has not changed since its inception in 1997. The sheet metal on the Cavalier since 1995. minor updates are usually made to their cars during a model run. In this case I am assuming the Impala will run from 2000 to 2004, with the same sheet metal. The 2003 Impala might have a change in ... Read More

The original Impala SS cars that ran from 1961 to 1969 were not necessarily designated as "high perfomance cars" I sense that a few current Impala owners always considered the SS option as meaning big engine with lots of horse power. The SS option in the 60's was strictly a cosmetic option that could be purchased for a few hundred dollars (at that time). SS option added bucket seats, SS exterior ... Read More
