Re: brake problems on chevy 2006 HHR [txdaye]
Written by: snowmoman on May 6, 2012 7:43:42 AM
The answer is throughout this forum. Replace the rotors yourself. GM is not going to help you. I bought rotors from Ebay which were cross drilled for cooler running, new pads, all for about $130. I did the work myself which was easy. Demos are on YouTube. The stock rotors are absolute junk and there is no other answer. Believe me.

I recently purchased my 2006 HHR LT this week with 114k miles on it and quickly discovered that my steering wheel shakes/vibrates when I apply the brakes. I took it to the tire shop to make sure the new tires that were on there were balanced. They were not so I had them balance them. I still have the shaking problem. Chevy turned my rotors 3 times - still vibrating. Chevy repalced the rotors after several years of arguing. 3,000mi. later vibrations are back, chevy turns them twice more after more verbal jousting. Vibration back after 4000mi. I than put Raybestoes aftermarket rotors and pads on myself - Its like a new car. Gm parts are nothing but crap.

Ours seems to be pretty good in snow ( I always run on winter tires here in the NE ,RWD,FWD,AWD whatever I'm driving) The only thing I've noticed is I tend to overpower it a bit (2.4 engine running 93 manual tranny) from a start mostly, I think if I ran lower octane I wouldn't be doing that.

Mine is a 2LT with the 2.4L, it has an automatic transmission and like all HHRs with an automatic transmission it has electronic traction control. I've been thru 2 decent snow storms (6-12inches) and it works great. The antilock brakes work great too. All HHRs with an automatic transmission also have remote start from the factory...good feature. Averaging about 26-27 mpg so far.
