2024 Chevy Express Cargo

The Chevrolet Express and its nearly identical twin, the GMC Savana, are the last of the traditional full-size cargo vans. With the last full redesign coming in 1996, and its lineage easily traceable to the 1980s, it should come as no surprise that the Express is very light on modern amenities and technology. But what the Express Cargo lacks in modernity it more than makes up for in work ethic. Capable of towing 10,000 pounds, easily customizable for any manner of applications, and priced thousands of dollars below its competitors, the Express Cargo easily earns its keep for commercial users and fleet operators.

Modernity can bring complexity and complexity can bring complications, so it's no surprise that a simple, if dated, Express Cargo remains the choice for many small-business owners. Beneath its straightforward styling is a basic cargo area, and though it's smaller than the space in more modern vans, it's readily customizable by any number of third-party outfitters. Engines options are similarly basic, with either a V6 or V8 — no turbochargers here — the latter of which delivers enough grunt to allow the Express Cargo to tow as much as a full-size truck. Inside, the Express Cargo is all business. Features are few and far between, but that sparseness and the lack of advanced driver aids help to keep the costs down.

The Express Cargo has three main competitors: the Ford Transit, Mercedes-Benz Sprinter and the Ram ProMaster. All three are far more modern in their construction, offer exponentially more body configurations with greater cargo capacity, and are available with more up-to-date technology. On top of that, the Ford and Mercedes can both be had with all-wheel drive.
