What's New for 2014
The 2014 Chevrolet Corvette will be fully redesigned.
Introduction
The arrival of a redesigned Corvette is always an event, and the forthcoming debut of the seventh-generation model is no exception. Despite the inevitable hype, the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette will likely be a subtle evolution of a classic look. The "C7" will maintain its traditional proportions with a long, low nose and a high, stubby rear deck, but some chiseling has been done around the edges to tighten up the current model's already lean figure.
Despite an oft-rumored switch to a midengine layout (something that enthusiasts have speculated about since the 1970s), the C7 will certainly retain a front-engine configuration complemented by a rear transaxle. The suspension layout will be familiar as well, as we expect double-wishbone control arms with transverse leaf springs (the latter design feature offers more compact packaging) to be carried forward. We do expect a major step transformation in the cabin, as Chevy knows this has been an obstacle to the Corvette's overdue recognition as a world-class sports car.
The most dramatic difference in the 2014 Corvette will be found under its long hood. The current 6.2-liter V8 in the regular Vette will make room for a more efficient, naturally aspirated 5.5-liter V8 that features direct injection, variable valve timing and possibly (and incongruously) fuel-saving stop/start technology. Despite the smaller displacement, the new V8 should be good for up to 500 horsepower. Furthermore, you can expect a seven-speed manual transmission to be standard equipment.
A rumored turbocharged, small-displacement V8 doesn't look likely to be ready for the debut of the 2014 Corvette, but we won't be surprised if it's offered within a few model years, as the Corvette C7 faces the demands of more rigorous CAFE standards for Chevrolet and all cars in general. Look for the new 2014 Chevrolet Corvette to be unveiled in January 2013 at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit and then arrive in dealer showrooms in time for summer weather.
