disappointed with Chev

I had a 1988 chev and was real happy with it. Bought a used 98 last yr with a 5 litre, auto, 2 wheel dr,and it has cost me plenty. The trani went for a $3,000 touch, rear pinon bearing, manifold gasket, drive shaft seal, thermostat, heater coupler, rad, fuel pump humms like a 747 ready to take off, it's been replaced once already, truck wonders on the road, no pulling power, interior lights work sometimes, frnt seats rattle and move while locked in place, rear seat does the same, squeeky 3rd dr, crappy tire jack design, try changing a tire at 30 below! I'm already looking for a different truck. Really disappointed in Chev.
Favorite Features
NIce to look at but real high maintanence.
Suggested Improvements
Build something with quality to be proude of. Shame on Chev.

A great truck

I bought this truck from my son two and a half years ago. He bought it new in 1997. He never drove it in the winter and it had only 46,000 miles when I got it. This is the sharpest looking truck I have ever owned. It performs great and is very reliable. The 5.0 v-8 has plenty of power to tow my 4200 lb trailer( it has a factory tow package). The gearing is great for highway mileage. I've gotten 24mpg on the highway, although the norm would be more like 16 in town and 21 highway. Like others the only thing I would change about this truck is the placement of the dash cup holder, what were they thinking? I hope to return this truck to my son's son in another 12 years.
Favorite Features
Everything
Suggested Improvements
Move cup holder to a place that it does't interfer with ac/heat dash outlet

Nice truck

Plenty of power. This truck has 4:10 rear end gear ratio so it pulls trailers easily. And it rides nice too. This is the first truck I have owned that my wife doesn't mind driving.
Favorite Features
Power plus nice ride

GM got it right on this one
Vehicle
1998 Chevrolet C/K 1500 Series 2 Dr C1500 Silverado Extended Cab SB
Review
Bought with 38k miles on it, now have 190k with origional engine and major parts. Had to replace normal stuff like alternator, water pump, starter and things that wore out. Known problems with these are a short list. Intake manifold leak, usually around 120k miles or so. Once fixed it is great. Fuel pumps, weak, on my 3rd one. The Vortec higher fuel pressure puts a stress on the GM pumps and when they go, can be real pricey. Radiator cracked at plastic side tank. 5.7 Vortec engine is the greatest, real good power, and with the bed loaded I still get 17mpg highway which I don't consider bad for a truck of this size. Holding value better then any car or truck I have owned.
Favorite Features
Vortec engine. Comfortable on long rides. Fun to drive. Very dependable and rugged
Suggested Improvements
A fuel pump that will last Intake manifold gasket is well known to repair shops, should be recalled as they all seem to fail, new ones fix the problems, so once fixed, good for a long time, unlike the fuel pumps which are in the gas tank and can be pricey.

Best 9yr old I know

My father bought this truck brand new in '98. I got it in 2000 and I've been driving it since. Great truck, no major problems. The salt air along the coast has taken a toll on the bumpers but other than that cosmetically it's clean. Recently had a dealership mechanic look at it, he couldn't believe it had 170,000 mi on it and told me the engine sounds better than the new trucks they sell.
Favorite Features
Powerful vortec engine that's indestructable
Suggested Improvements
Chevy should break out the mold and produce factory new 1998s again.

Good Truck

Review
The truck now has over 300,000 miles does not smoke. Drives not much different than new. Very few repairs. I've owned about every kind of truck you can think of. This is absolutly the all around best. I drive 40,000 miles per year. I expect to get over 1/2 milion miles on this one. Good fuel economy. Sharp and dependable. My only complaint is catalytic converter makes a lot of noise. Headlights do not project very well. However, 1 water pump, 1 alternator, 2 batteries, 8 sets of tires, 100 oil changes 3 transmission fluid changes 3 rear end oil changes and many tanks of gas is all that has been put into this truck.
Favorite Features
Dendability really makes this truck. Its bodystyle which is almost two decades old is still sharp. Truck is very comfortable. I also have an '04 Tahoe but I prefer my old p/u.
Suggested Improvements
I did not like the fact that the cup holder is right in front of the heat vent but that has already been corrected. I liked the older style throttle body fuel injection over the "vortec" because of fuel econo. that was last used in '95. but i just don't see them going back to that.

I got my 98 z71 with only 34k miles on it a few years ago. It's very well built. Easier to work on than other vehicles. Throw a lift and some tires on it and you're ready

Not a good tow vehicle!

Review
I bought this 1998 Chevy K1500 with a 5.0/5 speed, to tow a 22' sailboat. It does not have enough torque at a low enough RPM. I even have to downshift from 5th to 3rd going uphill, with no load. Horsepower is lacking also. I also have a 1998 Chevy Metro which is capable of faster acceleration than the truck, when both are empty. I added tie down points to the floor of the bed, because GM evidently didn't think anyone would actually try to haul anything with this "truck". I hauled an empty boat trailer weighing 1500# and this truck only got 11mpg on the highway! I would never buy another one like it. I am seriously considering buying back my S10, to haul my boat- it had torque!
Favorite Features
I like the 5 speed trans. and the seats are comfortable.
Suggested Improvements
GM trucks need more power and torque at a lower rpm, like the old 4.3 v6 had. Gas mileage decreases significantly when high rpm is necessary, (as it is in this truck) just to be able to upshift. If rpm is below 3500, you can't even maintain your speed when towing--or going uphill empty.

After always driving new trucks (Fords and a Nissan), I tried used - bought this GM. Wow! A truck that is not full of frills, bells, whistles that aren't needed. It is a true truck for the guy who really uses a truck. I haul large items frequently and pull a trailer. I also take it on long distance interstate trips. It is an incredibly solid and reliable truck so far, and has plenty of room for the family. My mechanic swears that with good regular maintenance, I can easily get 250000 miles out of the motor. Bought it with 69000 - it now has 81500. I never thought I'd like a GM, but now I love 'em!
Favorite Features
Visibility, acceleration, ride, comfort, hauling & towing capabilities
Suggested Improvements
Better cruise control switches, quieter wipers, gear shift should not block heat controls

Review
I've had my 1998 K1500 Silverado for almost four years now, and the only repair it needed was a new set of U- joints. Well built, the last of the old style before the 99's, so everything was pretty much perfected. Good acceleration and pulling power with the 5.7 liter, and gas milage better than Ford or Dodge.
Favorite Features
Z-71 package(better handling), more comfortable seats, and a better dashboard layout than Ford or Dodge. The sliding rear window(makes windows down driving more pleasant), powerful AC and heat.
Suggested Improvements
I wish they offered a smaller V-8 or V- 6 diesel when they made these. That would have made a great truck perfect.
