I have a 1998 Chevy Cavalier, and when it gets hot out the check engine light comes on and while driving in town my temp gauge drops from normal to cold, and when it does that my trans shifts hard. I had to do the conversion to miles and I think I have you beat. My 1998 cavalier has 234,614 miles on it. This car has been the best I have ever had. I did have the head gasket replaced with no garantee from the mechanic. That was about 3 years ago and the car runs and runs. Important to have the fuel filter changed when I have any power issues. I also own a 1998 Cavalier. It's the Z24 model. I have owned it from day one. In your case, you bought it used. You do not know how the past owner took care of the vehicle.
