  I have a 1998 Chevy Cavalier, and when it gets hot out the check engine light comes on and while driving in town my temp gauge drops from normal to cold, and when it does that my trans shifts hard. But when the light come on and im driving on the highway nothing esle happen it drives fine. Any sugestions?

  I had to do the conversion to miles and I think I have you beat. My 1998 cavalier has 234,614 miles on it. This car has been the best I have ever had. I did have the head gasket replaced with no garantee from the mechanic. That was about 3 years ago and the car runs and runs.   Any advice on how to replace an alternator in a 1998 Chevy Cavalier? The dealer says the engine has to be dropped to access it. I can't imagine engineers to design the engine like this, but they have done stranger things before. Moderate DIY. Thanks.

  I also own a 1998 Cavalier. It's the Z24 model. I have owned it from day one. In your case, you bought it used. You do not know how the past owner took care of the vehicle.   I have a 1998 cavalier and the only problem I have had with it is ALTERNATORS!!! I am on #4. All 3 previously reoplaced by GM dealers. Am moving to the Chevy Equinox.
