1998 Cavalier Alternator Problems
Written by: marksb18 on Jul 7, 2005 2:05:49 PM
Any advice on how to replace an alternator in a 1998 Chevy Cavalier? The dealer says the engine has to be dropped to access it. I can't imagine engineers to design the engine like this, but they have done stranger things before. Moderate DIY. Thanks.

I also own a 1998 Cavalier. It's the Z24 model. I have owned it from day one. In your case, you bought it used. You do not know how the past owner took care of the vehicle. If the Chevy dealer is reliable for you, I would take their suggestion and have the transmission overhauled. My car has been very reliable and has never left me stranded even when the on ... I just got on http://www.cars.com and saw a 1998 Chevy Cavalier 5-speed coupe with 35,144 on it for $6995. I live in Maryland though. But still, I am sure they are not that much more expensive where you live. Get a car with a clean history and you will be thankful later that you did. Also, before EVER buying a used car, go to http://www.carfax.com and run a vehicle history report ... Read More

Matty, please reconsider your decision
Written by: matto2000 on Aug 28, 2000 3:03:13 PM
Matty, please listen to my warning before buying that Cavalier. Nearly three years ago, I celebrated my 16th birthday and used my life savings (at the time) to buy my first car, a brand new 1998 cavalier. That may very well have been the worst decision I ever made. Within the car's first 4,000 miles, it contracted a very annoying and rather dangerous stalling problem, and just to clarify it's an ...
