Chevrolet Cavalier: Head Gasket Issues

  • 1996 Chevrolet Cavalier Overheating

    Written by: kingpalm61 on Mar 12, 2012 9:04:35 AM

I work as a mechanic and had just recently ran into this problem. Customer brought me a 1996 Cavalier that kept overheating. After finding a bad thermostat, bad head gasket and cracked head, I went ahead and corrected these issues. Car STILL overheated. Approximately 6 weeks prior, I had installed a new water pump. No blockage, coolant flowed freely. It was then that I noticed something - the water pump was ... Read More

I have a 1995 Chevy Cav LS Convertible. The ABS light has been on for years now, and I never got around to looking at why. I am mechanically inclined and do everything myself, but I don't really know where to start here. Is it in the brakes or is it something with the electrical? Did anyone have a similar problem?

To answer you question about the bumpers the first few years of this design 1995-1996 or 1997, the Cavalier VL (base model) had the grey bumpers. Chevy changed this to give the car a nicer and less rental look.

I drove my '95 Cavalier fine yesterday (32,000 miles only) and went to go out last night and within 5 min. of driving the brakes just WENT...they went nearly to the floor, i had very little control, heard a noise when i stepped on them and it was very frightening trying to get back home safely. Is this normal and what do you think it will involve? (Cost wise also?)

Well if you are going to have someone replace the mirror glass call around to glass replace shops and get an estimate. I think the glass shops would be the cheapest, they order and work with glass every day.

Gonogo, thanks so much...any chance i can do it cheaper thru someplace like autozone? (just lost my job...or wouldn't be asking..:( ) Again, thanks!!!

I believe you can buy just the mirror glass, call your local Chevy dealer parts department. Tell them year and model and that you want just the outside mirror glass for both sides.

I recently had the Head replaced on my 1995 Chevrolet Cavalier. After replacement the engine while in gear ran rough and made some funny noises. So I took it back to the shop that day. They had found that an injector was bad and replaced it at no charge. The engine now runs great while not in gear as well as on the highway, however at slow accelerations (low speeds) there ... Hey All you smart car people! I'm a student and recently turned 16. I currently drive my father's old 1995 Chevy Silverado half ton around and with gas prices sky-rocketing and for many other reasons I'm considering seeing if I should trade it in for a compact car. The truck is in excellent shape and with extreemly low miles and Kelly Blue Book said I could get between 5000 to 7500 ... Read More

Mandi -- SELL THAT CAR!!! RUN AWAY FROM IT VERY, VERY FAST!!! My wife and I traded our otherwise perfectly good 1995 Cavalier for a Mazda Protege5 in 2002 because, at 52,000 miles, we were in need of our FOURTH head gasket in the car! Chevy knew there was a problem and warranted the original head gasket for 100,000 miles -- but once you had the original replaced, you were on ... Read More

I got me a 2002 Chevy Cavalier (base) coupe about three months ago. So far it's great! Even though I didn't get any options on it, it is fully loaded. Plus, with the $2500 in rebates, not counting my trade in, I got in for around 10K with 5 year warranty. Try to get a Honda or Toyota with standard CD player, air, ABS, for that! I say sorta because my ... Read More

This Teo guy critcizes anyone who doesn't agree with him. Because a Cavalier in his books is beneath him. His liking is for Audi's and BMeers. On the Impala board all Teo talks about is his Chevrolet Impala how good GM and Chevrolet are and then comes to this board and slams everything about them. He's hard to understand. My wife's 1995 Cavalier is about to go bye-bye for a Mazda Protege. No more Chevrolet or GM for us, ever. Aside from things like a new alternator, new headlight switch, new seat cushion, new a/c compressor, new a/c and heat hoses and three radios in only 54,000 miles (enough problems, right?), here's the last straw: March 2000 (44,000 miles): Head gasket replaced under GM recall allowing one replacement in 100,000 ... we owned a 99 cavalier, bought the sob new..and its garbage..it only has 36555 miles and broke 6 times, its hard to start and tends to idle noisly and rough, the tranny isnt smooth at all, we just bought ourselves a 1995 TOYOTA COROLLA with 126,917 miles with Auto and A.c. runs like new, unlike chevy, i would never get an unreliable piece of junk like the cavalier.

I was referred to this site from Chevrolet Customer Service, they answered some of my questions, but they thought the users and staff of this site might be able to fill in the gaps... Here's the deal - Around Christmas-time while visiting family 700 miles from home, we got pulled over in heavy traffic. The Police officer maintains we were going 89 mph, while our speedometer clearly stated 74 (speed limit ... Read More

It's easy to say "get rid of the car" and all, but the car he's speaking of (1995 Cavalier) is paid off. Isn't it nice not to have a car payment on a car? Well I am sure Meade feels the same way. Plus, the car has less than 50K on it. It shouldn't be blowing anything yet. It's just an excuse Chevrolet uses to cover up their poor manufacturing, and ... Read More

The problem with the head gaskets in 1995 through 1999 Cavaliers is documented. They even issued an unpublished recall on the head gaskets for '95s and '96s that covers the head gaskets for 7 years/100,000 miles. BTW, I just heard back from the dealership. It was a broken bolt and TO MY AMAZEMENT AND DISBELIEF, they admitted that they probably overtorqued the bolts back in March. Therefore I'm not going to ... Read More

Matty, please listen to my warning before buying that Cavalier. Nearly three years ago, I celebrated my 16th birthday and used my life savings (at the time) to buy my first car, a brand new 1998 cavalier. That may very well have been the worst decision I ever made. Within the car's first 4,000 miles, it contracted a very annoying and rather dangerous stalling problem, and just to clarify it's an ...
