What looks to be the next-generation Jeep Liberty has been spotted near Detroit, though it may end up being called the 2014 Jeep Cherokee.
Now, we've seen a Liberty test mule before, but it looked like an Alfa Romeo Giulietta with a lift kit. This is still based on the Giulietta platform, but underneath that camouflage is something close to the finished production shape. The trademark slatted Jeep grille and squared-off wheel wells are there, but the headlights seem to be more modern with possible LED elements.
Although its more rounded body makes it look smaller than the old Liberty, its actual footprint should be a bit larger. These dimensions should pair with better on-road driving characteristics to achieve a compact crossover better able to compete with the Honda CR-Vs of the world.
It's still a Jeep, though, and our spy shots confirmed that this Liberty test mule featured a version of the brand's Selec-Terrain system.
