Consumers' Favorites: Midsize Family Sedan

Showing that its strong quality and value proposition haven't gone unnoticed, the Hyundai Sonata takes 1st place with 25.4 percent of the vote. This is nearly double the amount of the 2nd-place finisher, the well-rounded Ford Fusion with 13.2 percent. Nipping at the Fusion's bumper is a segment stalwart, the Honda Accord, which takes 3rd with 12.2 percent of your votes.

See how the rest of the field did in the full results below and make sure to exercise your right to vote in our next Consumers' Favorites poll.

  1. Hyundai Sonata

    1. Hyundai Sonata

    What Edmunds.com says:
The previous Sonata was a solid contender, but for 2011, the Hyundai Sonata vaults itself to the top of the class.

  2. Ford Fusion

    2. Ford Fusion

    What Edmunds.com says:
The well-rounded 2011 Ford Fusion is one of our top picks for a midsize family sedan.

  3. Honda Accord

    3. Honda Accord

    What Edmunds.com says:
The 2011 Honda Accord might still be a champ in terms of sales, but we think astute shoppers will find that several of its competitors are now more compelling.

  4. Kia Optima

    4. Kia Optima

    What Edmunds.com says:
From anonymous also-ran to eye-catching class leader, the 2011 Kia Optima is a must-drive family sedan.

  5. Toyota Camry

    5. Toyota Camry

    What Edmunds.com says:
The 2011 Toyota Camry isn't very exciting to drive, but it's a plush-riding champ on the highway and its optional V6 is superb. No wonder that the Camry remains one of the top family sedans on the market.

  6. Subaru Legacy

    6. Subaru Legacy

    What Edmunds.com says:
The 2011 Subaru Legacy offers standard all-wheel drive and above-average performance in a fairly large package. It's an offbeat choice, but a solid one nonetheless.

  7. Nissan Altima

    7. Nissan Altima

    What Edmunds.com says:
The 2011 Nissan Altima is a solid pick for a midsize sedan or coupe, particularly if you're looking for something with some sporting flair.

  8. Buick Regal

    8. Buick Regal

    What Edmunds.com says:
The 2011 Buick Regal proves the old "what's in a name" adage; the tri-shield division has produced a car worthy of consideration by those who truly enjoy driving.

  9. Mazda Mazda 6

    9. Mazda Mazda 6

    What Edmunds.com says:
The well-rounded 2011 Mazda 6 ranks highly among family sedans for its sporty driving dynamics and spacious interior.

  10. Chevrolet Malibu

    10. Chevrolet Malibu

    What Edmunds.com says:
The 2011 Chevrolet Malibu remains a popular, well-equipped entry in the hotly contested segment of midsize family sedans. It's starting to lag behind stronger segment leaders in some respects, however, and a replacement isn't due until 2012.

  11. Mitsubishi Galant

    11. Mitsubishi Galant

    What Edmunds.com says:
Despite this year's added features, the 2011 Mitsubishi Galant remains well behind the pack due to its relatively meager power, unimpressive cabin quality and outdated styling.

It's confusing to me why the Sonata is rated #1 and the Optima is at #4. They're virtually identical cars mechanically with different styling. I believe they even came from the same factory for 2011...BUT... the Optima has several additional features above the Sonata for the same price. My Optima had the same Premium and Tech Option packages as a Sonata but included Cooled Seats, Heated Steering Wheel and Panaramic Sunroof. None of those are/ were available in the Hyundai which actually had a sticker price slightly higher than my Kia.... Strange isn't it? Didn't the Edmund's staff notice this??
