GENEVA — The Volkswagen Golf beat the Toyota GT-86/Subaru BRZ and Volvo V40 to win the coveted title of Europe's Car of the Year. The announcement of the award was made in the run-up to the 2013 Geneva Auto Show.

The award is given by European automotive journalists.

Award organizers described it as "a comprehensive victory for the VW" with 414 points, well ahead of the Toyota GT-86/Subaru BRZ with 202 points and the Volvo V40 with 189 points.

Volkswagen said that more than 150,000 Golf vehicles have already been ordered throughout Europe. The recently redesigned Golf is a key part of the automaker's attempt to overtake Toyota as the world's biggest carmaker.
