WOLFSBURG, Germany — The pure electric Volkswagen E-Up! debuted on Thursday with European deliveries slated for early 2014, but Volkswagen of America told Edmunds the car will not be sold in the U.S.

The electric 2015 Volkswagen Golf will be sold in the U.S. starting in the second half of 2014, said Mark Gillies, a Volkswagen of America spokesman. He said the E-Up! was not homologated for sale in the U.S.

The E-Up! was unveiled at the Annual Press and Investors Conference here. It will make its auto show debut at the 2013 Frankfurt Auto Show.

The four-passenger Volkswagen E-Up! has a range of 93 miles, according to VW. It can be recharged to as much as 80 percent of its energy storage capacity within 30 minutes. It is equipped with an electric motor and a lithium-ion battery.

The E-Up!'s electric motor delivers 80 horsepower at peak power and delivers continuous power of 53 hp. It accelerates from zero to 62 mph in 14 seconds and has a top speed of 84 mph. The E-Up! weighs 2,612 pounds.

VW says the EV comes with an optional combined charging system that supports DC and AC charging.

Exterior cues include 15-inch alloy wheels, a curved layout of the LED daytime running lights and aerodynamic sills. The cabin gets light gray seat covers with blue topstitching.

Edmunds says: You may not see the Volkswagen E-Up! in U.S. showrooms, but get ready for the electric version of the 2015 Volkswagen Golf.
