TOKYO — Mitsubishi will unveil three concept vehicles at the 2013 Tokyo Auto Show that preview its new design approach.

The Mitsubishi Concept AR or "Active Runabout" hints at a next-generation compact multipurpose vehicle, while the Mitsubishi Concept XR-PHEV or "X (cross) over Runner" is a next-generation compact SUV.

The Mitsubishi Concept GC-PHEV or "Grand Cruiser" is a next-generation full-size SUV with a plug-in hybrid electric system.

While the three have not been fully revealed, teaser images released on Tuesday show vehicles with bold grilles and sweeping lines.

The automaker says the new design identity "symbolizes the sense of security and functionality of an SUV." The cars also show Mitsubishi's upcoming technologies.

The GC-PHEV is equipped with the company's Super All Wheel Control or S-AWC system said to deliver superior handling and all-terrain capability. The concept is a "connected car" that features preventive safety technology and driver support technology through wireless connectivity.

The XR-PHEV is designed to resemble a sport coupe.

The Concept AR gets a direct-injection turbocharged engine and a flexible seating setup.

Edmunds says: Mitsubishi puts the emphasis on future utility vehicles at the upcoming Tokyo show.
