TOKYO — Toyota has roared back from crippling disasters in 2011 by grabbing the 2012 global auto sales crown from General Motors.

Toyota on Monday announced worldwide sales of a record 9.75 million units in 2012, according to a statement on its global Web site.

That compares with 9.29 million units sold by GM and 9.07 million at Volkswagen.

Toyota's 2012 sales numbers include deliveries from its subsidiaries Hino Motors Ltd. and Daihatsu Motor Co.

GM had been the world's largest automaker since the 1930s before being passed by Toyota in 2008. Toyota held on to the top annual sales spot until 2011, when it was hit by natural disasters in Japan and Thailand.

Toyota appears poised to hold onto the title, with a redesigned 2014 Toyota Corolla and a 2014 Toyota Tundra in the pipeline. The 2014 Corolla was previewed earlier this month in the shape of the Toyota Corolla Furia Concept at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show.

The 2014 Toyota Tundra is scheduled to make its world debut at the 2013 Chicago Auto Show in early February.

Toyota also announced in late January that it will partner with BMW to produce a midsize sports car and work on fuel-cell systems and lithium-air batteries.

In the meantime, Volkswagen has made a corporate goal of passing both GM and Toyota to be No. 1 in the world by 2018.

Edmunds says: Kudos to Toyota, which is aware that it now has a major bull's-eye on its back.
