TORRANCE, California — Toyota has joined Nissan and Hyundai in offering car payment extensions to workers affected by the federal government shutdown.

Toyota Financial Services will defer up to three months of payments.

The offer is being extended to Toyota and Lexus customers, including furloughed workers, businesses and employees of businesses directly affected by the shutdown, government contractors and suppliers.

"We are pleased to be able to provide some flexibility to our customers affected by this situation," said Al Smith, Toyota Financial Services group vice president of service operations, in a statement on Monday.

Toyota says customers who have been affected by the shutdown and would like to discuss their account options should contact Toyota Financial Services at 1-800-874-8822 or Lexus Financial Services at 1-800-874-7050.

Earlier, Hyundai Motor America said it will defer all auto loan and lease payments during the shutdown for current Hyundai owners who are furloughed.

Nissan and Infiniti owners affected by financial problems, including the government shutdown, are getting a car payment extension of up to 90 days.

It is estimated that more than 800,000 workers will not get paid during the shutdown, which has dragged on for two weeks.
