PALO ALTO, California — Elon Musk, the entrepreneur who brought you Space X and the Tesla Model S, has a new transportation trick up his sleeve called Hyperloop.
He's promised to reveal the first details — the so-called "alpha design" — on Monday.
Contrary to his usual chatty nature, Musk hasn't said much about Hyperloop, which has been the subject of much speculation in Silicon Valley. Tesla Motors did not respond immediately to a request from Edmunds on Friday for more information about the impending announcement.
In a July 15 tweet, Musk wrote: "Will publish Hyperloop alpha design by Aug 12. Critical feedback for improvements would be much appreciated."
During an August 7 conference call with financial analysts, Musk elaborated: "I did commit to publishing a design and provide quite a detailed design . . . and then invite critical feedback and see if the people can find ways to improve it. Then you can just be out there as kind of like an open-source design that maybe you can keep improving. I don't have any plan to execute it because I must remain focused on SpaceX and Tesla."
The insurance Web site GoCompare.com produced a speculative infographic, describing Hyperloop as "the 5th Form of Transportation," after trains, planes, boats and automobiles.
Edmunds says: Stay tuned; Musk rarely disappoints.
