Just the Facts:
  • Tesla Motors is giving customers upgraded wall-charger adapters and providing charger-software upgrades for the Model S sedan, the automaker said on Friday.
  • The upgrades are designed to prevent overheating that may be caused by substandard household wiring.
  • Customers should receive the new charger connectors, which connect the Tesla charging cord to a wall outlet, in the next few weeks.

PALO ALTO, California — Tesla Motors is giving customers upgraded wall-charger adapters and providing charger-software upgrades for the Model S sedan, the automaker said on Friday.

The upgrades are designed to prevent "excessive heating of the adapter," the company said.

Customers should receive the new charger connectors, which connect the Tesla charging cord to a wall outlet, in the next few weeks.

"We have designed an improved wall adapter with a thermal fuse," the company said in a statement. "Even if the circuit breakers on the house side and car side don't trip, the thermal fuse will prevent current from flowing if the wall socket region heats up for any reason."

The move comes after several reports of overheating wall chargers were posted on the Tesla Motors Club forum and an investigation of a garage fire in Irvine, California by the Orange County Fire Authority.

Tesla recently sent out a software update that upgraded the control software to cut charging if the building's wiring couldn't handle the load.

Edmunds says: New and existing Tesla owners will get the upgraded adapter, which should provide more peace of mind.
