PALO ALTO, California — Tesla Motors has opened the first supercharger stations on the East Coast to serve owners of the Tesla Model S.

The new additions are located at the Milford Travel Plaza in Milford, Connecticut and the Delaware Welcome Center and Travel Plaza in Newark, Delaware, Tesla Motors said. The new stations are designed for Model S owners traveling in the Boston-to-Washington corridor.

The first Tesla supercharger stations were set up in six locations throughout California.

The rollout of the supercharger stations in the Northeast is designed to give Model S owners "free long distance driving," the company said.

Tesla Motors plans to expand to over 100 stations nationwide by 2015.

The supercharger stations can add about 150 miles worth of charge, or approximately three hours of drive time, to a Tesla Model S battery pack in about a half an hour – much faster than any other charging equipment on the market.

The Model S is the only electric car able to use the stations. They are incompatible with vehicles such as the Nissan Leaf.

Edmunds says: An important step for Tesla Motors as it begins to make life — and recharging — easier for Model S owners on the East Coast.
