PALO ALTO, California Tesla Motors reached a major milestone on Sunday with word that the Supercharger network for its electric Model S sedan now stretches from Los Angeles to New York.

"Tesla Supercharger network now energized from New York to LA, both coast + Texas! Approx 80% of US population covered," tweeted Tesla CEO Elon Musk.

Tesla now has 71 Supercharger stations in North America, according to its Web site. It said that by 2015, 98 percent of the U.S. and parts of Canada will have access to the charging stations.

The Supercharger stations are located near major highway interchanges close to restaurants, rest stops and shopping centers. They are designed to let Model S drivers take breaks while their cars are recharging.

The Superchargers only work with the Model S and provide 170 miles of range in a 30-minute charge.

Edmunds says: The proliferation of the Supercharger network should be added reassurance to any car shopper considering the electric Tesla Model S.
