DETROIT The Smart Trunk system in the 2015 Hyundai Genesis, the clever console in the 2015 Chrysler 200 and the LED spotlights on the 2015 Ford F-150 are among the new automotive convenience features on display at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show.

The Genesis Smart Trunk system is designed to open the trunk automatically if the smart key is detected in a pocket or purse within a few feet of the rear bumper for longer than three seconds.

The Korean automaker says this setup makes more sense than ones that require a person to kick their foot underneath the rear of the vehicle to open the trunk or hatch.

"This system allows the driver to keep both feet comfortably on the ground, simply waiting by the trunk a few seconds for it to open automatically," Hyundai said in a statement.

The Smart Trunk system also provides an audible warning and flashing light prior to opening.

The new rotary e-shift dial in the 2015 Chrysler 200 allowed designers to create a more functional and usable center console, according to Chrysler.

The automaker calls it a "clever" center console, "made possible by the full electronic gear shifting with rotary shift knob." This setup does away with the traditional center console shifter.

"A unique pass-through storage feature that the driver and front-seat passenger can both access is enabled by the rotary-dial electronic shifting, a segment first," said Chrysler in a statement. "A clever opening at the rear of the pass-through area allows wires and cables from items stored in the pass-through area to route directly to the hidden power supply located in the covered center console. The center console features innovative sliding cupholders with smooth, furniture-like movement, allowing drivers and passengers to use the space in a way that best fits their needs."

The 2015 Ford F-150 features a long list of convenience features, including LED spotlights on the side mirrors that light up the area around the truck's exterior, a benefit for those who have to work outside in the dark.

The F-150 also can be equipped with a remote tailgate that allows the tailgate to be locked, unlocked and released with the key fob and integrated loading ramps, which enable easy loading of ATVs, motorcycles and mowers.

The pickup also features high-wattage power outlets in the cab that allow drivers to charge corded tools, battery chargers or mobile devices on-site or while driving.

Edmunds says: Car shoppers are demanding convenience features and automakers are answering the call.
