REIFNITZ, Austria — Volkswagen's Czech subsidiary will unveil the Skoda Rapid Sport concept May 8 at VW's GTI meeting at Worthersee, the Austrian Alpine lake that has been the setting for the German automaker's annual tuner and motorsports gathering for more than three decades.

Intended to show off the "inherent possibilities" in the car, the Rapid Sport gets mostly cosmetic enhancements. Among them are 19-inch alloy wheels, twin tailpipes, Recaro seats, sport steering wheel, front spoiler and side skirts.

The Rapid Sport is painted Corrida Red and Steel Gray metallic.

The subcompact Rapid was introduced last fall in Europe as a five-door hatchback with a sedan profile. It goes on sale later this year in China and next year in Russia. It shares its basic underpinnings with the VW Polo, the Audi A1 and the Seat Toledo.

Edmunds says: Not terribly rapid or sporty, but a bit less pedestrian-looking.
