CHOLMONDELEY, United Kingdom — The 2013 Cholmondeley Pageant of Power in the United Kingdom is set to give the powerhouse Goodwood Festival of Speed a run for the money.

As Goodwood grows ever larger and more corporate, purists are turning to Cholmondeley (pronounced "Chumley") as an attractive option. The Pageant of Power is something akin to how Goodwood used to be: smaller, simpler, more down to earth and with far fewer crowds. In comparison, Cholmondeley typically draws 50,000 spectators versus 185,000 for Goodwood.

As Cholmondeley gathers momentum, major manufacturers such as Ford are getting increasingly involved. In some circles, the Pageant of Power has been likened to a "northern version" of the Goodwood Festival of Speed. Cholmondeley is one of the U.K.'s must-do car enthusiast events.

Dates for the Pageant of Power were just released. They are set for June 14-16 and anyone who buys a ticket before April 2013 will get a free pair of ear plugs.

Set in the grounds of Cholmondeley Castle in the northern county of Cheshire, the Pageant of Power is a weekend geared toward speed, spectacle and sound, but with a difference.

At heart, the Pageant is a sprint against the clock. Cars and bikes of all ages and classes get to compete along a 1.2-mile course that winds through this picturesque estate. The Caterham Lola SP/300.R set the fastest four-wheeled time for the course at the 2012 Pageant.

The Pageant is also about powerboats and helicopters.

For 2013, organizers are taking it all a step further, promising "a sequence of dramatic challenges," such as supercars versus rally cars.

"Noise will be a notable theme, with attendees encouraged to vote for their favorites in orchestrated 'noise-off' battles between evocative machinery — classic and modern, from thunderous aero-engined cars to wailing Formula One racers," organizers said.

Edmunds says: The 2013 Cholmondeley Pageant of Power clearly is gunning for the Goodwood Festival of Speed.
