PARIS — Renault said it will take the wraps off a prototype vehicle on Thursday that "provides a bridge between the world of Formula 1 and that of electric vehicles." The prototype will feature muscular styling and "impressive performance credentials," said the French automaker.

"It's a concept car that will make a lot of noise, but in total silence," said Renault in a statement.

Renault has dabbled in performance-oriented electric vehicles in the past, most notably with its Renault DeZir concept at the 2010 Paris Auto Show.

The DeZir (pronounced "desire") is a two-seater with gullwing doors that open in opposite directions. It also features an electric motor that drives the rear wheels.

Renault and alliance partner Nissan are at the head of electric-vehicle technology, with products like the Nissan Leaf and Renault Zoe.

The new Renault prototype will be revealed at the automaker's Valladolid plant in Spain.

Edmunds says: Should be very interesting to watch Renault's latest take on performance and zero emissions.
