AUBURN HILLS, Michigan — Racing daredevil Travis Pastrana has renewed his relationship with Dodge in the Global Rallycross Championship.
Pastrana Racing will field two Dodge Dart Rallycross cars in this year's series. Rallycross has been described as "motocross — with a roll cage."
Pastrana, 29, is a four-time Rally American Champion and 10-time X Games Gold medalist.
Pastrana will lead the Dodge contingent against Ford, which boasts two-time defending champion Tanner Foust and runner-up Brian Deegan, plus Saab, Subaru, Hyundai and Citroen. Bryce Menzies will drive a second Pastrana Racing Dodge this season.
"At Dodge, racing is an integral part of our heritage and embodies our competitive spirit, so we're very excited to have Travis Pastrana back in the Dodge Dart for the 2013 season," said Reid Bigland, Dodge brand president and CEO, in a statement.
Pastrana first became prominent in motocross racing and freestyle motocross exhibition riding and then parlayed the skills of those high-energy spectacles into mainstream notoriety via ESPN's X Games, first on two wheels and later on four in the events that led to creation of the Global Rallycross Championship in late 2009.
The series, like the X Games, caters to the youth culture and high-flying action sports. It captures some of the essence of snowboarding and skateboarding in automotive exhibition. Pastrana, a sort of 21st century Evel Knievel, is a natural for the X Games and Rallycross.
"Travis Pastrana exemplifies what action sports activities are all about and he fits perfectly with the Dodge brand and the SRT Motorsports team," said Ralph Gilles, president and CEO of SRT Brand and Motorsports. "There is no doubt that Travis' personality and driving skills will continue to bring energy and excitement to this season."
Edmunds says: Pastrana will work Rallycross into a busy schedule, as he continues his endeavor to break into NASCAR racing. He's a high-flyer in corporate relationships as well, crossing brand-name lines by driving a Roush Fenway Racing Ford Mustang in Nationwide Series competition.
