WASHINGTON — Consumers now have greater access to vehicle safety information from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's SaferCar.gov Web site thanks to a free app for iPhones and iPods.

The SaferCar app lets users file a vehicle safety complaint, find recall information and locate car-seat installation help.

Consumers can register their vehicles to be notified by NHTSA if their vehicle is subject to a recall. They can also look up federal crash test ratings and compare them across different makes and models. The app also can be used as a bar code scanner to find vehicle identification numbers.

"The new SaferCar app literally puts the latest in vehicle safety information directly in the hands of consumers so they can make the appropriate purchasing and other decisions for themselves and their families," said David Strickland, NHTSA administrator, in a statement on Thursday.

The SaferCar app can be downloaded from Apple's iTunes Store.

NHTSA said development is also in the works for a version compatible with Android devices.

Edmunds says: An excellent tool for consumers who want real-time information about vehicle safety.
