TORRANCE, California Rossi Honda of Vineland, New Jersey is the first dealership in the U.S. to achieve "electric grid neutral" status, as it dramatically slashes its energy usage, according to American Honda Motor Co.

Simply put, the dealership produces as much or more electricity than it uses from the local utility.

The dealership installed 900 solar panels on canopies over vehicles in its parking lot as part of its energy-saving initiative. The solar-energy setup not only saves on energy costs, but the canopies protect the vehicles from the elements and lighting adds security. The dealership also replaced the metal halide lamps on its parking lot light poles with LED lamps. It also instituted other energy-efficiency measures.

The entire system now generates over 100 percent of the dealership's annual electricity use, thus achieving Rossi's goal of electric grid neutral.

Honda defines "electric grid neutral" as "producing as much as or more energy from renewable energy sources than it consumes from its local electric utility over a one-year period." The definition is based on Honda research, the automaker noted.

"We can make a big difference," said Ron Rossi, the dealership's owner.

Rossi said his "monthly electric bill dropped to almost zero."

Honda launched its U.S. "Green Dealer" program in 2012. Since then, it says it has helped dealers to develop "a measurable and verifiable system to achieve significant reductions in energy use and cut CO2 emissions."

Edmunds says: Car shoppers who are making "green" a priority in all aspects of the buying experience will be turning to dealers like Rossi Honda.
