DETROIT The Infiniti Eau Rouge, a design study based on the production Infiniti Q50 luxury sedan, previews what is intended to be a whole sub-brand for Infiniti, Edmunds has learned. The Eau Rouge debuted at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show.

The Eau Rouge sub-brand will compete with the high-performance AMG brand from Mercedes-Benz, the high-performance M brand from BMW and Cadillac's V models.

The Eau Rouge is intended to be different from Infiniti's IPL brand, which is short for Infiniti Performance Line. The Infiniti IPL lineup includes the 2014 Infiniti Q60 IPL convertible and 2014 Q60 IPL coupe.

Infiniti has not spelled out how it will differentiate the two performance brands, as the future of the IPL brand appears to be uncertain. Michael Bartsch, vice president of Infiniti Americas, told Edmunds the company is unsure what it is going to do with the IPL brand.

A production version of the Eau Rouge would target the BMW M5, Cadillac CTS-V and Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG. There is no target date for the launch of an Eau Rouge car, but Infiniti President Johan de Nysschen said he is insisting that the car be built.

The concept features wide fenders, more aggressive fascias, a domed and vented hood, blacked-out trim and wheels that measure 21 inches in diameter. Carbon-fiber parts include the front splitter, rear diffuser, roof, mirrors, side skirts and interior trim.

Edmunds says: Infiniti clearly thinks car shoppers are ready for even more high-performance models than it currently offers.
