HUNTINGTON BEACH, California — Hyundai is capitalizing on the success of its 2013 Hyundai Veloster and 2012 Elantra Coupe zombie-survival machines by letting fans of the undead build their own zombie-combat vehicle. The Walking Dead Chop Shop application debuted on Thursday, allowing users to create their own personalized zombie survival machine.

The 2013 Hyundai Elantra, Veloster Turbo or Santa Fe serve as the base for the machine, with participants adding armor, survival accessories and custom graphics. The zombie fighter can be equipped with necessary items, including machine guns, razor wire, off-road bumpers, exhaust silencers and armor plating. There are almost 300 parts from which to select.

Hyundai will build an actual model of the best variant and show it off at the New York Comic-Con in October.

Hyundai and its advertising partner Innocean USA said they noticed fans of the zombie-survival machines were changing the original cars and "discussing how they would create their own."

Users will be able to share their creations with friends, get graded on survival techniques and test out the vehicles in various scenarios inspired by The Walking Dead. The contest grades the offensive, defensive, stealth and speed capabilities of the machines.

The app is available for the iPhone or iPad.

Edmunds says: Hyundai's zombie car configurator is turning into an infection that's spreading rapidly. As of Friday, there were already more than 36,000 versions up and running.
