SHANGHAI, China — One of the most polarizing vehicles at the 2013 Shanghai Auto Show may be the Honda Concept M minivan, which has been called everything from "terrifying" to "cool."

The Honda Concept M, a compact minivan, is aimed at the Chinese market. Powertrain details were not released.

The most controversial part of the Honda Concept M is the elaborate front end, which looks like something inspired by the masks in Chinese opera.

Honda said in a statement that the production version of the Concept M will go on sale next year in China.

"The Concept M is a concept vehicle for the MPV (multipurpose vehicle) segment developed mainly for the Chinese market," the company said.

Honda has been taking some risks with its minivans lately. The 2014 Honda Odyssey Touring Elite grabbed headlines at the 2013 New York Auto Show with its in-car vacuum.

Edmunds says: How would this minivan look in the school carpool line in the U.S.?
