TORRANCE, California — Honda will be a major player at the 2013 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, with plans to field products in nine race classes, a first for any major automaker in a single Pikes Peak event.

Entries will cover the spectrum from motorcycles and ATVs to automobiles, with entries including the first-generation Acura NSX and the Acura TL SH-AWD.

Honda said it is working to "strengthen Honda's presence in racing at all levels."

The announcement on Tuesday came a little more than three weeks after French marque Peugeot announced it would return to the legendary "Race to the Clouds" with rallying great Sebastian Loeb as its driver.

"Pikes Peak presents us with a unique opportunity to showcase Honda's diverse product lineup and to energize Honda fans around the world, as we work to further strengthen Honda's presence in racing at all levels," said Mike Accavitti, senior vice president of automotive operations for American Honda, in a statement.

Simon Pagenaud, who races a Honda-powered Dallara in the Izod IndyCar Series for Schmidt Hamilton HP Motorsports, is slated to spearhead Honda's effort at Pikes Peak. Pagenaud's Pikes Peak vehicle entry and racing class will be announced at a later date.

Honda Performance Development and Team-Honda Research will develop the vehicles that will compete in the event, which takes place on a 12.42-mile paved road with 156 turns, climbing 4,720 feet to the 14,110-foot summit of the famous mountain in central Colorado.

Honda claims its effort is the biggest one ever for an auto manufacturer at Pikes Peak, which will present the 91st edition of the hill climb on June 30.

Honda competed at Pikes Peak the past two years, and participated in the Electric Vehicle category in 1994 and 1999. A 2013 Fit EV will participate in this year's race as part of the company's effort.

Edmunds says: No doubt the notoriety Hyundai gained with Rhys Millen's overall victory last year in a modified production Hyundai Genesis coupe has gotten the attention of numerous automakers.
