DETROIT — General Motors said it is the first U.S. automaker to sell more than 1 million vehicles in its home market in a single year that get an EPA-estimated 30 mpg or better in highway driving.

GM's Thursday statement is a striking about-face, since Detroit automakers used to crow about horsepower and huge engines.

"Our smaller vehicles are resonating with customers," said Mark Reuss, president of GM North America. "In 2013, we'll introduce new diesel, eAssist and plug-in vehicles in the United States and expand the availability of turbocharged four-cylinder engines."

GM said combined 2012 sales of its mini, small and compact cars are expected to be up about 39 percent, partly fueled by the Chevrolet Spark and Buick Verano. GM also noted that about 40 percent of its vehicles sold in 2012 had four-cylinder engines, which is 10 percentage points higher than in 2010. GM will announce 2012 sales later today.

Buick is set to launch a 33-mpg Buick Encore in 2013 and Chevrolet will introduce a 2.0-liter clean diesel for the Chevrolet Cruze, along with a pure-electric version of the Chevrolet Spark.

GM noted that 13 of its vehicles have "at least one high-volume model that achieves 30 mpg highway or more." They include the Chevrolet Spark, Chevrolet Sonic, Chevrolet Cruze, Chevrolet Volt, Buick Verano, GMC Terrain and Cadillac ATS.

Edmunds says: Good-bye gas-guzzlers. It's a new era in the Motor City when fuel efficiency counts for more than horsepower.
