DEARBORN, Michigan — Ford is the latest automaker to show off a self-parking car, saying the next step is to make the feature available on a production vehicle.

Ford demonstrated the technology on a Ford Focus in Europe in a new YouTube video.

"A car that does the dirty work itself," is how the company describes the new technology. The technology moves Ford a bit closer to a fully self-driving car.

The technology is dubbed Fully Assisted Parking Aid. It is a new automated parking technology that could enable drivers to park with only the push of a button from inside or outside of their car.

It is "currently in the prototype phase and controls steering, gear selection, and forward and reverse motion to allow push-button parking," Ford said.

The company did not specify which vehicles will get the self-parking feature, when it will debut or how much it will add to the bottom line.

Ford is also working on an obstacle avoidance system that uses automatic steering and braking to avoid collisions with pedestrians or vehicles that are stopped or slowing in the same lane ahead.

The self-parking trend began in 2007 when Lexus debuted an auto-parking feature on an LS sedan. The feature has moved into mass-market cars, including the Toyota Prius.

Audi debuted Piloted Parking at the 2013 Consumer Electronics Show. The prototype system would allow drivers to exit the car and then turn the parking over to the vehicle. Drivers could summon the cars remotely with a phone app.

Ford's self-parking feature is a critical step forward in Europe, where parking is difficult in crowded urban centers.

Edmunds says: Ford joins the race to perfect the self-parking car.
