DEARBORN, Michigan — Ford's new Mustang Countdown, an online video series, celebrates 50 years of the popular pony car. The series leads up to the 50th anniversary of the Mustang on April 17, 2014. Videos include a behind-the-scenes look at the Mustang 1 concept car and a race between two radio-controlled Ford Mustangs.

Ford explained the thinking behind the series by saying, "The Ford Mustang is about to become the newest member of a very exclusive club — vehicles in continuous production for 50 years." More than 9.2 million Mustangs have been produced and sold since its introduction in 1964.

The automaker has not said when the all-new 2015 Ford Mustang is set for its debut. But auto designers have told Edmunds that the 2015 Mustang has good bones, a stunning appearance, but still "looks like a Mustang."

"All I can tell you is that it looks great," said Jack Telnack, former global design boss at Ford. "You will know it's a Mustang. There is no question about that." As the world awaits further word on the 2015 Mustang's unveiling, there are plenty of entertaining videos to watch, courtesy of the new series.

One of the videos focuses on "The Cliché RC Action Chase," which garnered nearly 3 million views on YouTube. A pair of Ford Shelby GT500 Mustangs star in a chase scene designed to rival the one in Bullitt:

Another video offers a look at the Mustang Concept 1:

Upcoming episodes will feature video games, Mustang's competition heritage, custom modifications and more, according to Ford.

Edmunds says: The hype begins ahead of Mustang's 50th anniversary - and the debut of the 2015 Ford Mustang.
