TURIN, Italy — The Fiat 500 has gotten cooler: literally. Fiat and appliance maker Smeg have teamed up to create a refrigerator, the SMEG500, out of the front of the iconic car.
Priced at the U.S. equivalent of $7,800, the chest fridge, meant for private homes and bars, already has a minimum two-month waiting list in Europe. Smeg USA told Edmunds that the Fiat refrigerator is not available in the U.S.
With headlights and two tires, the Fiat refrigerator has two sliding glass doors under the hood. It sports a top rating for energy efficiency and is available to order in white, red and green finishes.
The SMEG500 extends the line of Fiat 500 Design Collection products, which include a sofa, table and console table. All items were inspired by the car, which has cult status in Italy.
This isn't the first time Fiat and Smeg have come together on a project. The two Italian companies collaborated in the 1950s on another refrigerator line.
Edmunds says: Describing a car as an appliance used to be the ultimate insult. But that doesn't seem to matter to mold-busting Fiat.
