WASHINGTON — The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has opened an investigation into an estimated 103,374 2005-'07 Chevrolet Corvettes after receiving 30 complaints from consumers alleging the loss of low-beam headlights while driving at night.

Some of the consumers say the problem is intermittent and some reported that low-beam headlight functionality returns after a period of time.

The 2005-'07 Corvette has not been recalled at this point, but such an investigation by federal safety regulators can sometimes lead to a recall.

"The loss of illumination impairs the driver's ability to see the roadway," said NHTSA in its summary of the problem. "In one of the 30 reports, a driver allegedly ran over a discarded tire while attempting to pull off the road.

"Some complainants reported that the problem is intermittent and some reported that low-beam headlight functionality returns after a period of time, typically after the vehicle has been parked. The high-beam headlights and foglights remain operational. However, if drivers continue driving using their high-beam headlights, they could impair the vision of other drivers."

General Motors did not respond immediately to a query from Edmunds asking about the investigation.

Edmunds says: If you own a 2005-'07 Chevrolet Corvette, there's not much to do at this point except to wait for federal safety regulators to finish their investigation.
