WASHINGTON — The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has launched a probe into an estimated 2,500 2005-'06 Dodge Vipers because the rear suspension knuckle allegedly may break while the car is being driven.

"The rear suspension knuckle allegedly may break while driving and cause a loss of vehicle control," said NHTSA in its description of the problem.

NHTSA said it has received two complaints alleging failure of the rear suspension knuckle in 2005-'06 Vipers, resulting in a loss of control and two crashes. It also listed one injury linked to the probe, but did not offer any details.

Chrysler told Edmunds on Tuesday it is "working co-operatively with NHTSA on this matter."

Federal safety regulators have opened what is called a "preliminary evaluation" into the matter. Such an action sometimes leads to a recall, but the 2005-'06 Viper has not been recalled at this point.

Edmunds says: If you own a 2005-'06 Dodge Viper, there's not much to be done at this point, except to wait for federal safety regulators to finish their investigation.
