DETROIT — Sales of the Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid tripled in 2012, according to General Motors.

GM sold 23,461 Volts in 2012 compared with 7,671 in 2011.

General Motors reported that its sales rose 5 percent in December and 4 percent for all of 2012.

"Combined mini, small and compact car sales were up 52 percent year-over-year, driven by continued strong Buick Verano, Chevrolet Spark and Sonic sales; a 27 percent increase for the Chevrolet Cruze; and a 72 percent increase for the Chevrolet Volt," said GM in a statement on Thursday.

GM had been expected to sell 10,000 Volts in 2011, the first full year of sales for the car.

Volt sales got a boost in 2012 when California allowed solo drivers access to its free-flowing HOV or high-occupancy-vehicle lanes.

Edmunds says: Could the Chevrolet Volt's improved sales be a result of people seeking to save time rather than gas?
