MUNICH, Germany — BMW and automotive supplier Continental are revving up an effort to develop self-driving cars.

BMW said the main goal is to have highly automated driving functions ready for implementation by 2020.

A joint project between the two is scheduled to run from now until the end of 2014 with an eye on launching prototypes "capable of highly automated operation on motorways." The vehicles will be tested on European public roads.

"Both companies agree that highly automated driving will play a major part in ensuring sustainable personal mobility in (the) future," BMW and Continental said in a joint statement.

The German automaker said it already guided an autonomous vehicle around the Nurburgring North Loop in 2009. It also tested an autonomous research prototype in Germany in mid-2011.

"This research prototype, which is still undergoing continuous improvement, braked, accelerated and overtook other vehicles entirely autonomously," BMW said in a statement earlier this week.

It described the prototype as having "little on the outside to tell this vehicle apart from a standard model."

BMW also said it is experimenting with biosensors that can detect if a driver is having a heart attack. If such an emergency is detected, the BMW Emergency Stop Assistant is able to switch the car to an automated driving mode and bring the vehicle safely to a stop.
