HERNDON, Virginia — Zachary Quinto and Leonard Nimoy, actors who play Star Trek's Mr. Spock, face off in a new Audi commercial that takes direct aim at Mercedes-Benz. The commercial has gone viral on social media, with 1.4 million YouTube views in the first day.
Quinto, as the young Mr. Spock, drives a 2013 Audi S7 while Nimoy, as the elderly Mr. Spock, drives a 2013 Mercedes-Benz CLS550.
Nimoy issues an uncharacteristic expletive when he can't stuff his golf clubs into the Mercedes-Benz and ends up buckling them into the front seat of the car.
Spock, a half-human and half-Vulcan, is known for his wise logic, calm temperament and, perhaps most importantly, his paralyzing Vulcan nerve pinch that renders victims unconscious.
The YouTube video kicks off with both Spock characters playing a game of chess on their iPads and deciding to up the ante with a car race to the country club. The loser has to buy lunch. Hip, modern Spock hops in his 2013 Audi S7 and manages to beat the elderly Vulcan in his 2013 Mercedes-Benz CLS550 to the club.
Don't count Nimoy out too quickly, though. He has a trick up his sleeve.
A self-driving Audi marks the end of the ad, which both Spocks find absolutely "fascinating."
The ad arrives just in time to hype up the release of the next Star Trek film called Star Trek Into Darkness, which debuts on May 16.
Edmunds says: Audi not only owns Iron Man 3, it also is making advertising headway with the new Star Trek movie, two of the biggest blockbusters of the summer.
