HERNDON, Virginia — Audi models with Apple CarPlay, which is designed to improve iPhone integration with the car, won't arrive in U.S. showrooms until 2016, the automaker confirmed on Monday.

The automaker did not specify which models would feature the technology.

Audi said Apple CarPlay will minimize driver distraction.

Apple CarPlay will allow drivers to access their iPhone to make calls, use maps, listen to music and send or receive messages. The driver does not have to pick up the phone since the main functions can be operated through the car's infotainment system.

"In CarPlay-equipped models, Audi motorists will simply connect their iPhone to begin using their apps through the car's native controls," Audi said in a statement. "Drivers also have the option to easily switch from the CarPlay view and the Audi infotainment functions as desired."

Earlier, Audi said it will introduce Google's Android Auto technology, another smartphone offering, with all new models launched in 2015.

Edmunds says: Audi buyers who want Apple CarPlay are in for a wait. But the good news is that Audi will offer both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
